The purpose of building the Erie Canal was to ship good more efficiently to the Midwest from the Atlantic and New York City. Before the canal there was no good overland route to the Midwest. Roads were full of ruts and often muddy in the winter. It was a long and expensive trip. By road it cost 100 dollars per ton to move goods from Buffalo, New York to New York City and only 10 dollars per ton on the canal.
